The Estill County seat is Irvine, the largest of the small communities in this part of Kentucky and a host for an annual agate festival called the Mountain Mushroom Festival and Agate Show. The area is rural, heavily forested, and transected by the Kentucky and Red rivers and Station Camp Creek, a major tributary of the Kentucky River.

We spent a full weekend collecting geodes and agate in and along the Green River and the South Fork of Station Creek in Kentucky's Lincoln and Jackson Counties, respectively. Certain parts of the Green River are well known for their abundance of geodes that have weathered out of the limestone strata. Kentucky Agate is only found in a small region of Eastern Kentucky. It ranges in color from brilliant red, orange, yellow, and burgundy to subtle pastels of lavender, pink, and green. Roland pointed out that out of all of the color combinations that the stone is found in, the rarest is red and black.
